Black History Month

Black history month is the yearly observance of black history and its contribution to the United States. It is celebrated during the entire month of February, from February 1st to March 1st. It is a celebration of important black people and their contributions to history and the United States. Black History month is important to observe and learn the history of the United States and who helped make it what it is today. There have been many important black historical figures who have helped influence the United States and change it for the better. One of the most influential figures in US history was Martin Luther King Jr., an civil rights activist who lead and spoke about segregation, racism, and equality until his assassination on April 4th, 1968. His most famous speech was “I have a dream,” and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Another famous person celebrated during black history month is Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was a political activist who worked to free people from slavery. Born into slavery, she escaped and then over the course of her life, freed about 70 enslaved people. She is most known for her efforts to free people from slavery through the Underground Railroad, a group of antislavery activists and safe houses. Along with Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth was also born into slavery. She escaped with her infant daughter in 1826 and began her life of advocating for civil and womans rights. Her work during the Civil War earned her an audience with President Abraham Lincoln in 1864. Sojourner Truth was the first black woman to win a court case against a white man. In 1828, she went to court against John Dumont in an attempt to recover her son after he had been illegally sold after the New York Anti-Slavery Law of 1927. There are many more important figures honored during Black History Month, and it is very important to take note and learn about what Black History Month is and why it is important to observe. There is much information on Black History Month and important people who are celebrated on the internet, and knowledge is power. There is so much to learn about black people who have influenced history and the country, and there is unlimited information to be found. Learning about these influential figures can not only help teach people about the history of the US, but can also help honor them during Black History Month.
