I would like to start off by saying that this article’s main purpose is to recruit more people to join winter track if you are interested keep reading to find out how to join. However if you are not interested I still encourage you to read and find out if you might be. To start off with I will paint the scene of coming to practice, Tuesday evening the running track adjacent to Harvard Gulch park, a chill in the air as the sun slowly sets.
As the athletes arrive coach Lex and Whimbush kick off practice with a warm up consisting of 2 laps around the track at an easy pace. Next are stretches that are done to loosen muscles so we can do our best with the limited time we have. As soon as everyone is ready we split into two teams consisting of sprinters or distance, I am running with the sprinters however it is up to you which one you choose.
As soon as we split up under the directions of coach Whimbush we partake in running activities that are designed to make us stronger without causing bodily harm. These exercises consist of sprinting 80 meters with resistance, running up hills, slow running or simply running around the track as fast as possible to build up speed and endurance. No matter which exercise we are doing coach Whimbush is able to keep track of every athlete and is always able to point out what we are doing wrong and how we can improve.
Once that is done we do a cool down lap, stretch, and do a team cheer then we leave. There is no need to worry about getting sick — our coaches take the team’s temperature every practice and wearing a mask is required. If you are interested in joining we meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:00pm at the track across from Harvard Gulch. We also meet on Saturdays however the time and place often shift to try to contact either of the coaches if you are unsure.
As of right now we are only doing running exercises and everyone when joining will work out with the team however every starts at their own pace.
If any of this sounds interesting or you just want to meet new people talk to Mr Williams or Mr Whimbush and say you want to join and they can tell you how.
